The Followers of Horus
An Eastern Desert Safari with David Rohl, founder of the Eastern Desert Survey Project. This camping expedition is unique to AWT and affords an opportunity to visit the most famous rock art sites recorded by our teams over the last twelve years, many of them totally new discoveries. |

Sites:
Karnak in Luxor. In the Eastern Desert there are too many sites to list by name - and many of them are simply GPS reference points. However, of particular interest are Sites 15, 18 and 26 and the Wadi Hammamat.

Day 1 - London to Luxor
Fly London to Luxor with EgyptAir and on arrival we transfer to the Mercure Hotel for two nights on room and breakfast basis.
Day 2 – Karnak
After a leisurely breakfast we head to Karnak Temple. We will explore the many temples, halls and shrines and the great Hypostyle Hall. We take time to study the sacred barques of Karnak with their high prows and associated iconography that we will see so much of in the desert. We also visit the Open Air Museum. Free time this afternoon before we meet in the evening for an informal chat about plans for the next five days. (B)
Day 3 – Kanais/Barramiya
An early start as we load up our Landcruisers and drive to Edfu before turning east leaving the Nile behind and stopping at our first site, Kanais in the Wadi Abbad. We will look at the rock-cut temple of Seti I, the Roman guard post and the well cut in to the desert floor by Seti’s soldiers. A short walk from the temple we can see our first predynastic rock art including many boat carvings. On into Wadi Barramiya to see more art on the cliff face not far from the road. Late afternoon we will leave the road and head off in to the desert to find a sandy dune and camp for our first night under the stars. (BLD) |

Day 4 – Umm Salam
After our desert breakfast we set off for Wadi Umm Salam. Here nearly every rock face bears carvings of boats, animals and hunting scenes. We explore the ‘jacuzzi’ site a now dry pool that was once a gully with fast flowing water. After a picnic lunch we set off for Wadi Kash and find another sandy location for our camp. (BLD)

Expert: David Rohl is largely responsible for the re-awakening of interest in the rock-art of the Eastern Desert. As founder of the Eastern Desert Survey Project, he has lead teams of enthusiasts to new and exciting discoveries in this wild and beautiful part of Egypt.
Day 5 – Site 26
An exciting day as we head for one of the most spectacular sites of the trip ‘site 26’ in Wadi Abu Wasil as discovered by Hans Winkler in the 1930s. A long square boat with two large chieftain style figures wearing twin plumes dominates the rock face but there are many amazing sites in this wadi. Again we will enjoy a picnic lunch while we continue to look at further sites. (BLD)
Day 6 – Sites 18 & 15
We break camp and head for the famous ‘site 18’ another site recorded by Winkler but lost until 2004 when an AWT Eastern Desert Survey team relocated it. This interesting site still bears the chalk markings of Winkler’s recording activities. The art covers several boulders, walls and a cave and it is possible to see the sereks with the Horus falcon. Next we head to Wadi Atwani to visit the cave at Winkler’s ‘site 15’. Back in the vehicles we aim for Wadi Hammamat where will will camp for our last night in the desert. (BLD)

Day 7 – Wadi Hammamat
For the last time we pack our bags, break camp and hit the tarmac. We will stop at the schist quarries to look at the numerous inscriptions left by workers in the Pharaonic era. We then head back to the city of Luxor where we will say goodbye to our driving team before checking-in to the Mercure Hotel for our last night in Egypt. (BL)
Day 8 – Luxor / London
This morning we fly Luxor to London arriving early afternoon. (B)
