ANNOUNCING THE AWT AUTUMN CONFERENCE

AWT is pleased to announce that our Autumn Conference weekend will be the 3rd and 4th of September at UCL, not as previously thought at Imperial.

Barry Kemp
We are delighted to be able to welcome Professor Barry Kemp to our conference. Recently made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to archaeology, education and international relations (Egypt) Barry will be presenting two talks for us. The first will be based on the preparation for publication of the records of the 1923/24 EES excavations at the North Palace and is entitled, Harem politics at Amarna: reflections on looking at some old excavation records. Later we will hear ‘Plans for the future,’ a talk about the need to balance excavation against preservation of the main buildings, especially in the Central City.

Kate Spence
House and home at el-Amarna: some thoughts on domestic architecture. What do we really know about the homes and life of the people that lived in this new city?

Bill Manley
Millions of happenings out of your oneness. The Creator and Creation in the Sun-Hymn. What we should know about the most complete text of the Hymn to Aten from the Tomb of Ay.

Joanna Marchant
Curse of the Pharaoh’s DNA. High-profile DNA studies have revealed fascinating insights into the lives of Tutankhamun and other Egyptian mummies, yet many researchers say they don’t believe the results.

Gillian Pyke
Christianity on the Edge: The North Tombs Settlement at Amarna. Surveying the dwellings and landscape of Coptic Amarna and the significance of the conversion of the Tomb of Panehsy.

Paul Nicholson
Glass, Faience and Pottery Making at Amarna O45.1: An Ancient Industrial Estate. Ancient Egyptian glass is among the finest from the ancient world. Understanding and recreating the technology of the period.

Jo Fletcher and Stephen Buckley
Royal Mummies of the Amarna Period. A joint lecture taking a deeper and scientific look at the evidence we have.

Steve Cross
Excavating in the Valley of the Kings: The Missing Amarna Royalty, are they really there? Latest news on how geology plays a leading part in the ongoing work in the Central Valley.

AWT at UCL

The AWT conferences at UCL have been a huge success over the last few years - we have been running these for over a decade now at Highclere Castle, Reading University and now UCL. The Roberts Lecture Theatre at UCL is the setting for this conferences. Located on Torrington Place, the theatre is within easy walking distance of many tube stations and Euston mainline station.

Welcome tea and coffee is available from 9 am with the first lecture opening at 10 am. The conference package includes teas, coffees, two good lunches and a splendid buffet dinner. There will also be a Bar available from 5pm on the Saturday. This will be an ideal opportunity to relax, catch up with friends and chat to our experts. A map of the location will be sent out with an information letter, about two weeks prior to the event to everyone that books.

We look forward to seeing you there!
