UNKNOWN EGYPT

This is an excellent way to see all the main sites of Cairo, Aswan and Luxor in one tour but with some unusual AWT extras.

 

Day 1 – London/Cairo

 

Fly London to Cairo with EgyptAir and on arrival check-in to the Sofi tel Sphinx Hotel Giza for three nights on room and breakfast basis. This fi rst-class resort hotel is in an excellent location close to the Pyramids with all the usual amenities.

 

Day 2 – Abu Sir/Heliopolis

 

 

We start as we mean to go on with visits to two major and two rarely seen sites around Cairo – the Great Pyramids and mighty Sphinx at Giza beckon, followed by the isolated pyramids and tombs at Abu Sir and the outdoor museum at Heliopolis. We end our day with a tour of the treasures of the unforgettable Cairo Museum. (B)

 

 

 

 

Day 3 – Tanis/Bubastis

 

A full day in the Delta as we explore the massive ruins of Tanis, some of the most atmospheric and mighty in all Egypt. We will see the tombs of Psusennes and Osorkon. On to the mysterious remains of Bubastis of the cats with its Old and New Kingdom cemeteries and catacombs of feline mummies. (B)

 

Day 4 – The Faiyum

 

After breakfast we depart for the Faiyum and explore the beautiful ancient ruined Ptolemaic-Roman city of Karanis with its temples and mud brick walls. Then to the pyramid and mastaba at Meidum, both of which may be entered. We fi nish at the remote site of Hawara to view the pyramid and the site of the Labyrinth. Excavations by Petrie at Hawara unearthed the famous mummy portraits. We will check-in for one night at the pleasant Auberge. (BD)

 

 

Day 5 – Middle Egypt

 

A wonderful day exploring the rarely seen and atmospheric ruins of Qasr Qarun and Qasr el Banat and then on to the isolated Pyramid of Lahun. We travel on to Middle Egypt and check-in for two nights at the Etap in the bustling city of Minya. (BD)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 6 – Amarna

 

A totally unforgettable day as we cross the Nile to investigate the city of the heretic pharaoh Akhenaton at Amarna. We will explore the site looking at the city, The Royal Palace, Great Temple, Royal House, This is a very special tour taking us to many sites which are not normally visited by the ordinary traveller to Egypt. Archives and tombs. We also visit the lovely remains at Tuna el Gebel including the tombs of Petosiris and Isadora and the evocative catacombs. We will also visit Ashmunein. (BD)

Day 7 – Beni Hassan/Luxor

 

We start the day with the rock tombs at Beni Hassan with their unique wall paintings and the small Hatshepsut Temple before visiting the famous yet almost unknown Fraser Tombs. This afternoon we board the fi rst-class train to Luxor and check-in for three nights at the Old Winter Palace Garden Pavilion. (B)

 

Day 8 – The West Bank

 

Today we cross to the West Bank to study the reliefs in the Temple of Seti I and take time in the fascinating Merneptah Temple with its new museum. We will also visit the Valley of the Kings to enter some tombs and then visit the impressive Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El Bahri. (B)

 

Day 9 – Mo’alla/El Tod

 

Two special sites outside Luxor today as we visit the tombs at Mo’alla and the lovely Temple at el Tod. Later we will take an in depth tour of Karnak the greatest temple ever built exploring its many halls and avenues. Our last stop will be the smaller but beautiful Luxor Temple that was once joined to Karnak by an avenue of Sphinxes. (B)

 

Day 10 – Luxor/London

 

After breakfast we take the EgyptAir direct fl ight from Luxor to London arriving early afternoon. (B)
