ROMANIA

In the least known and most beautiful country in Europe we explore numerous fascinating ancient and medieval sites in an ageless and dazzling landscape.

 

Day 1 – London/Efori

 

Fly London to Bucharest with British Airways and on arrival head east to Adamclisi, and the famous Trajan monument which commemorates the Roman victory over the Dacians in 102 AD. From here we head toward the Bronze Age complex of Basarabi, and then to the medium-class Hotel Fracara in Eforie on the Black Sea. (D)

 

Day 2 – Eforie/Tulcea

 

In the morning we head north for the fascinating Greek colony of Histria and thence to the Casimcea River gorges, home to early Christians. Continue to Tulcea on the Danube Delta for the three star Delta Hotel. (BD)

 

Day 3 – Tulcea/Meledic

 

After breakfast we visit nearby Isaccea, the ancient Celtic centre of Noviodunum. Close by is the early church at Niculitel. We depart for the Carpathian Mountains, the most beautiful part of Romania and one night at a medium class pension on the shores of Meledic Lake. (BD)

 

Day 4 – Meledic/Moeciu

 

We travel towards Transylvania through the Carpathians stopping at rarely visited ancient troglodyte structures. Continue through beautiful scenery and even a Saxon fortress to see the largest gothic church in Eastern Europe in Brasov and thence to the medium-class Pension Zana Muntilor in Moeciu. (BD)

 

Day 5 – Moeciu/Târpesti

 

A fascinating day as we head for the medieval town Piatra-Neamt and the museum dedicated to the outstanding ceramics of the Neolithic Cucuteni culture. Continue to the remote village of Târpesti, where a local archaeologist has uncovered more than 20 Neolithic sites, the biggest one in the middle of his own village. We dine with the family and sleep in local houses. (BD)

 

Day 6 – Târpesti/Vama

 

In the morning our journey continues north to Sucevita monastery, with some of the fi nest religious paintings from the Middle Ages. The exterior frescoes survive unaltered since the 16th century. We continue to the painted monastery of Moldovita and then to Vama and the Hotel Zimbrul. (BD)

 

Day 7 – Vama/Sighisoara

 

After breakfast we drive through impressive lofty gorges and mountain passes to Transylvania, and Sighisoara, continuously inhabited since the 12th century and overnight at the Kokeltal Hotel right in the citadel. (BD)

Day 8 – Sighisoara/Deva

 

We head for Alba Iula and its fascinating museum of local fi nds and then on to two nights at the Deva Hotel, Deva. (BD)

 

Day 9 – Sarmizegetusa

 

A fantastic day as we head into the deep countryside and spend all day exploring the magnifi cent and extensive ruins of the forts of Sarmizegetusa. (BD)

 

Day 10 – Pitesti

 

Today we depart for thriving Pitesti and a fi nal night at the medium-class Hotel Muntenia. (BD)

 

Day 11– Pitesti/London

 

We depart Pitesti for Bucharest and the return flight to London. (B)
