EGYPT A SPECIAL VIEW

Being an exploration of many of the rarer sites of Upper Egypt from Akhmim to Kalabsha.

 

Day 1 – London/Luxor

 

Fly London to Luxor direct with EgyptAir and check-in to the Old Winter Palace Garden Pavilion for seven nights on room and breakfast basis. The Old Winter Palace is centrally located on the corniche close to the Luxor Temple, the museums and shops. Our rooms are situated in the peaceful gardens of the Winter Palace.

 

Day 2 – Karnak

 

We start our tour with a full and in depth investigation of Karnak Temple. We will explore the many temples, halls, shrines and obelisks taking time to wander through the magnifi cent columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall and to relax by the Sacred Lake to take in the atmosphere of The Precinct of Amun. (B) 

 

 

Day 3 – Akhmim/Sohag

 

 

A full day journeying north to visit the fascinating remains of the rarely visited site of Akhmim once a thriving city. A rare chance to view the eleven metre high statue of Meryut Amun. We will cross the Nile to Sohag and from there journey across the plain to the lovely Red and White Monasteries. (B)

 

Day 4 – The West Bank

 

After breakfast we cross to the West Bank and explore Qurna temple, the Asasif tombs of Pabasa, Kheruef and Ankhhor before walking on to the temple of Thutmose III, Hatshepsut’s Temple and the Dra Abu’l-Naga tombs. Our last stop today will be at the new Merneptah Temple and its fi ne Museum. (B)

 

Day 5 – Wadi Hammamat

 

 

A full and exciting day as we head into the Eastern Desert to study the rock inscriptions at Wadi Hammamat. A chance to view predynastic art, hieroglyphic inscriptions and cartouches and quarrying dating from the 1st Dynasty. Day 6 – The West Bank

 

We cross again to the West Bank to visit the workmen’s village at Deir el-Medina. Here lived the masons, painters and sculptors who worked in the Kings’ Valley. We will also enter their fi nely painted tombs built beneath man-size pyramids. (B)

 

Day 7 – Abydos/Dendera

 

A full day tour to Abydos to see the Temple of Seti I, perhaps the grandest in all Egypt. Cult centre for the god Osiris we will see some of the fi nest reliefs in Upper Egypt including the famous Kings list. We will also explore the Osireion behind the main temple. We will also take a guided tour of the Temple of Hathor at Dendera. (B)

Day 8 – Luxor/Gebel Silsila/Aswan

 

A journey by road to Aswan via another rarely visited site as we enjoy the quarries at Gebel Silsila. On arrival in Aswan we check-in to the comfortable Elephantine Hotel for three nights. Finally a trip to the outstanding Nubian Museum. (B)

 

Day 9 – Philae/Kalabsha

 

Today we take a short boat ride and tour lovely Philae Temple, see the inscriptions at Bigeh and also visit the Temple of Kalabsha by the shores of Lake Nasser. (B)

 

Day 10 – Aswan

 

A wonderful day that takes us to Sehel Island for the famous inscriptions there, then on to the exceptional and vast excavations on Elephantine itself. To end the day we will enter the Tombs of the Nobles at Kubbet el-Hawa. (B)

 

Day 11 – Aswan/London

 

After breakfast we transfer to Aswan airport for a connecting fl ight in Cairo and then on to London. (B)
