LIBYA REVEALED

A deeper exploration of this vast country takes us from mighty Leptis Magna into the Sahara and a comfortable safari to discover an incredible wealth of ancient rock art.

 

Day 1 – London/Tripoli

 

We fl y from London to Tripoli with Afriqiyah Airways and on arrival transfer and check-in to the fi rst-class Bab el Bahr Hotel or similar for one night. We will have a short city tour before dinner. (D)

 

Day 2 – Sabratha/Sebha

 

This morning starts with a drive to the city of Sabratha to see the ruins of this amazingly successful and wealthy city with its fi ne theatre and streets. After lunch in a local restaurant we will drive to the airport for the short fl ight to Sebha. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel or a fi xed camp where we will have the use of all facilities including showers and toilets. (BLD)  

 

Day 3 – Mathendush/Idhan Murzuk

 

Today, we pack our four wheel drives to start our desert tour and head to Wadi Mathendush to see the prehistoric rock carvings, many of them dating back twelve thousand years. Then into the mountainous sand dunes of the Idhan Murzuk. Tonight we will set our own camp and our drivers and cook will prepare our evening meal under the starry desert skies. (BLD)

 

Day 4 – Akakus

 

After a camp breakfast we will continue toward the mountains of Akakus famous for the striking dark basalt stone monoliths, natural rock formations and desert views. We will stop to explore some of the fi nest rock art in the area. We set camp for our second night out in the desert. (BLD)

 

Day 5 – Akakus

 

Another full day in the mountains exploring wadis, looking at rock art and enjoying the scenery. Mid afternoon we prepare our camp for nightfall. Day 6 – Aweis/Germa

 

Today we drive through the stunning scenery of the Aweis with its deep golden sands heading toward the city of Aweinat and on to Germa once the capital of the Garamantian empire. See the ruins of old Germa with its ancient cemeteries, pyramid tombs and museum. Tonight we will stay in a fi xed camp and have a chance to use all the site’s facilities including toilets and showers. (BLD)

 

Day 7 – Sahara Lakes

 

An exciting drive across miles of sand dunes to visit the Sahara Lakes a highlight of the Libyan Sahara. We will visit the four main lakes, amazingly full of water for most of the year despite being many miles from ocean or river. After our picnic lunch we will return to Sebha Airport and say goodbye to our desert team for our return fl ight to Tripoli. On arrival we will transfer to our fi rst-class hotel in the city. Day 8 – Leptis Magna/Villa Silene

 

A full day at the world famous ancient city of Leptis Magna, at the height of its prosperity the largest, grandest Roman city in Africa. A chance to explore the Hadrianic Baths, the colonnaded street, the New Forum, the Punic Market, the theatre and the atmospheric amphitheatre. We will also visit the beautiful Villa Silene. Back to Tripoli for dinner and overnight. (BLD)

 

Day 9 – Tripoli

 

A day in Tripoli with visits to National Museum, Castle, Marcus Aurelius Arch and a walk through the old medina. After lunch we will visit the traditional souk looking at local crafts with time for shopping. (BLD)

 

Day 10 – Tripoli/London

 

This morning some free time until we transfer to the airport for our fl ight with Afriqiyah Airways from Tripoli to London. (B)
