AWT has previously run eleven superbly successful tours to see the solar eclipse in Turkey, Libya, Iran and Egypt; carrying several hundred passengers, divided into smaller groups, for this truly memorable event. We are very proud of our eclipse tours and the outstanding group of specialists we work with. Each tour is accompanied by a recognised expert as well as a local guide who will help you get the most from your experience.
Day 1
Fly London Heathrow to Beijing with Air China
Day 2
Today we will tour the beautiful palaces of the Forbidden City and overnight Beijing
Day 3
Fly to Urumqi and transfer to Turpan to explore the old oasis city
Day 4
In the ancient oasis city of Turpan we visit ancient ruins, beautifully painted Buddhist caves and irrigation systems that rival anything on the world and all on the edge of the mighty Taklimakan desert
Day 5
We continue today with a long drive across the desert to the beautiful Tien Shan Mountains and to the pleasant town of Hami for overnight
Day 6
Today we will explore the region with its nomads, traditional villages and way of life far removed from modern China
Day 7
On the eclipse day itself we will drive to the Yiwu area and our chosen eclipse site where we will have plenty of time to set up and enjoy this most wonderful of events before returning for our final night in the region
Day 8
Today we depart from Hami we return to Urumqi by train by way of a change and overnight
Day 9
Fly to Xian for two nights
Day 10
As a second highlight to an incredible journey today we will visit the legendary terracotta warriors. This huge subterranean army of life size soldiers must surely rank as one of the wonders of the world

We are very lucky to have an outstanding selection of experts lined up to accompany these eclipse tours and they include Sheridan Williams, respected scientist and lecturer; Giulio Del Zanna, Research Fellow Department of Space and Climate Physics University College London; Mike Beales, ex solar director of the BAA; Malcolm Coe, Senior Astronomer at Southampton University; Neil Bone, gold medal winning astronomer; Geoff Elston, a highly respected astronomer from the BAA, Ian Morison, Gresham Professor of Astronomy and Kevin Kilburn, Manchester Astronomical Society. At this stage we are not allocating individual experts to particular tours.
