Day 1 - Monday 1st November 2021

We fly London Heathrow to Luxor and on arrival take our private transfer and check in to the Old Winter Palace, Garden Pavilion Wing, for two nights on room and breakfast basis.

Day 2 - Tuesday 2nd November – Tombs and Temples bl

We take our private launch across the Nile to meet our bus and head to the Valley of the Kings. We have tickets for three tombs of your choice from those open on the day. We have also included tickets for the magnificent tomb of Seti I. For a complete change in pace we drive to the quieter more remote West Valley where we enter the tomb of Ay. We have a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant. After our break we visit the lovely temple of Seti I where we see depictions of Ramesses II kneeling before his father, Seti. Next, to the Ramesseum, mortuary temple of Ramesses II where we view the toppled colossi and some stunning reliefs of the Battle of Kadesh. Later in the week we will enter the temples of these two Pharaohs in Abydos.

Day 3 - Wednesday 3rd November – Dendera to Abydos bld

Today we leave Luxor and take the road north for Abydos. On our journey we stop at the Temple of Hathor at Dendera. Here in the fabulous Hypostyle Hall we can see the astronomical ceiling restored and cleaned to its original colour. We view the crypt, rooftop sanctuaries and allow plenty of time to walk the outer walls. We have a lunch box from the Winter Palace today. We continue our journey to Abydos and on arrival we make our first visit to the glorious Temple of Seti I. Later we check in to The House of Life, a local hotel, close to the sacred temples. We are on full board basis at this comfortable hotel.

Day 4 - Thursday 4th November - Anubis Mountain bld

Today a rare treat as we have a special permit to enter the Tomb of Senusret III cut in to the natural ‘pyramid’ shape hill known as Anubis Mountain. The eight hundred foot long structure cut into the hill is still being studied by a team from Penn Museum. We also take a look at the Ahmose Pyramid. After lunch at the hotel we head off to Kom el Sultan with massive mudbrick walls dedicated to Khenty-Amentiu and we have time to walk to the huge mudbrick enclosure of Shunet El Zebib dating to the 2nd Dynasty and built by Khasakhemwy. Finally a look at the Temple of Ramesses II with its fine Battle of Kadesh scenes on the outer walls.

Day 5 - Friday 5th November – Sohag and Akhmim bld

This morning we drive to Akhmim and the Open-Air Museum to view the vast statue of Meritamun. The colossus of Ramesses II, discovered in pieces in 1981, is now restored and re-erected in the Museum. We continue to Sohag National Museum where we find many pieces relevant to the area we are exploring on this tour. Finally this morning we stop at The White Monastery. We return to our hotel for lunch and have some free time before our Special Permit entry to the Temple of Seti I. After the sun goes down and the floodlights come on we have arranged a private visit to the Temple with plenty of time to wander through the shrines on our own.

Day 6 - Saturday 6th November – Beit Khallaf bl

We could not leave the area before visiting the village of Beit Khallaf where we have a special permit to view the massive Third Dynasty mud brick mastaba tombs surveyed by Garstang in 1900. After lunch at the hotel we leave Abydos and head back to Luxor and on arrival check in to the Old Winter Palace, Garden Pavilion Wing, for two nights on room and breakfast basis. Later we have a guided tour of Luxor Museum.

Day 7 - Sunday 7th November - Nefertari bl

To the West Bank and the Valley of the Queen’s where we have included tickets for the stunning Tomb of Nefertari. We also enter other tombs of the Prince’s that are open on the day. Then, on to Deir el Medina where we explore the village of the workmen who built the very tombs we entered today and earlier in the week. We have time to visit some of the artisan’s tombs, the nearby Ptolemaic temple and view the Great Pit. We have a break for lunch before heading back to the East Bank and a tour of the Temple of Amun at Karnak. For those interested we plan an evening walk to Luxor Temple to view the reliefs by floodlight.
