Egypt, Land of Dreams and Divination with Dr Luigi Prada

A stunning new tour, designed to uncover the power that the mysterious world of dreams and divination held in the minds and lives of the ancient Egyptians.

EGYPT, LAND OF DREAMS AND DIVINATION

We explore some of the country’s most extraordinary archaeological sites and museums. From dream interpretation to astrology, and many other arts of soothsaying, ancient Egypt was already famous across the ancient Mediterranean world as the cradle of divination, as a land whose gods often spoke through the riddle of dreams and other natural phenomena.

Accompanied throughout by Dr Luigi Prada, associate professor of Egyptology at Uppsala University, Sweden, and a leading specialist in the topic of ancient Egyptian dreams and divination, who will give illustrated talks along the way.

Join our Special Permit to stand at the paws of the Great Sphinx to study the ‘Dream Stela’ of Thutmose IV and admire Khafra’s colossal sculpture from up close!

We travel the entire length of the country, from Alexandria to Aswan, looking at large and smaller sites, highlighting the role that dreams and divination played in the history of Ancient Egypt.

We encounter dreams in the inscriptions of kings, from Thutmose IV in the 18th Dynasty to the Kushite Tantamani during the Nubian takeover of Egypt, as well as in the testimonies of popular cults, from Saqqara’s ancient necropolis to Alexandria’s Serapeum.

The stunning astronomical ceilings of the temples of Esna and Dendera, with the Zodiac signs still immediately recognisable to the modern eye, remind us of the importance that the starred sky held for the ancient Egyptians in the performance of their sacred rituals, as well as the practice of astrology and the casting of horoscopes.

Explore the necropolis of Elkab, ancient Nekheb, where Luigi has worked as co-director of the Oxford/Uppsala epigraphic team. What better way to explore and enjoy the lavishly decorated tomb chapels from the early New Kingdom and the temples out in the desert wadi.
